How Often Should You Groom Your Dog? A Breed-by-Breed Guide for Gurgaon

Grooming frequency depends on coat type, breed and Gurgaon's climate. Shih Tzus need 4-week visits, Goldens 5 to 6, Huskies a seasonal blow-out. Here is the full schedule.

Every dog coat works on its own schedule. Groom too rarely and mats, skin infections and shedding take over your home. Groom too often with the wrong products and you strip the coat's natural oils. In Gurgaon's heat and dust, most dogs need a professional session every 4 to 8 weeks, with the exact gap set by breed and coat type.

The quick answer, by coat type

Silky coats that mat fast (Shih Tzu, Maltese, Bichon Frise) need grooming every 4 weeks. Double-coated shedders (Golden Retriever, Labrador, German Shepherd, Husky) need de-shedding every 6 to 8 weeks. Short-coated breeds (Pug, Beagle, Indie) hold out 6 to 8 weeks for a bath and nail trim. Long-haired cats have their own schedule, covered in our cat grooming guide.

Breed-by-breed grooming schedule

How often each breed needs a session

BreedFrequencyFocus of each visit
Shih Tzu, Maltese, BichonEvery 4 weeksHaircut, face trim, mat prevention
Golden Retriever, Cocker SpanielEvery 5 to 6 weeksDe-shedding, feathering trim, ears
Labrador, GSD, HuskyEvery 6 to 8 weeksDe-shedding blow-out, undercoat care
Pug, Beagle, IndieEvery 6 to 8 weeksBath, nail trim, fold cleaning

Why silky coats need the tightest schedule

Shih Tzus, Maltese and Bichons do not shed much, but their fine hair tangles into mats close to the skin. A mat left for a few weeks pulls on the skin, traps moisture and hides infections. At Pawmiable we do Shih Tzu haircuts including the puppy cut, top-knot style and teddy bear cut, with face trim and eye-area cleaning included in every visit.

Between visits, a 5-minute daily brush at home makes a visible difference. Focus on the ears, legs and belly, where mats start first.

Why double coats need de-shedding, not shaving

Goldens, Labradors, German Shepherds and Huskies blow their undercoat twice a year. Gurgaon's climate stretches coat-blowing season longer than colder cities, so the house fills with fur for weeks. A high-velocity de-shedding blow-out removes the loose undercoat in one session, cutting loose fur by up to 80% without touching the guard coat.

Never shave a Husky. The double coat regulates body temperature, and shaving damages it permanently. The blow-out removes the undercoat without cutting.

Short coats are not maintenance-free

Pugs, Beagles and Indies shed more than most people expect. Pugs also collect debris in their facial folds, which needs cleaning every visit to prevent irritation. A bath, nail trim, ear check and fold cleaning every 6 to 8 weeks keeps short-coated dogs comfortable.

Skipping sessions costs more, not less

Delaying grooming does not reduce the work. It compounds it: mats get denser, nails grow into pads, and the eventual session takes longer and costs more. A regular 4 to 8 week schedule is the cheaper and kinder option.

How Gurgaon's climate changes the schedule

Gurgaon stretches every grooming gap compared with colder cities. The long warm season keeps double-coated breeds blowing undercoat for months instead of weeks, dust works deeper into long coats, and the monsoon keeps coats damp, which accelerates matting and skin irritation. A schedule that works in Bangalore or Delhi winters is usually too loose for Gurgaon.

The practical rule: take your base schedule from the breed table, then tighten it by a week if your dog walks in dusty areas, swims, or has had skin or matting problems before.

What a regular schedule costs

Yearly grooming cost by frequency

FrequencySessions per yearYearly cost at Rs 899
Every 4 weeks13About Rs 11,700
Every 6 weeks9About Rs 8,100
Every 8 weeks7About Rs 6,300

The cost guide on this site breaks down every package and add-on, and the honest math is that skipped sessions usually cost more, not less: a matted coat needs de-matting or shaving, and the occasional deep session costs more than the regular ones you skipped.

Signs your dog is overdue

  • The coat smells soon after a home bath.
  • You can feel mats when you run your fingers through the coat.
  • Nails click on the floor.
  • Fur is building up around the house faster than usual.
  • Your dog is scratching more, or flinching when touched in specific places.

If any of these are true, book sooner rather than later. A fuller list of warning signs is in our signs your dog needs grooming guide.

Grooming frequency for cats in Gurgaon

Cats run on a different clock. Long-haired cats like Persians and Himalayans need a professional session every 4 to 6 weeks, because their coats mat fast in humidity. Short-haired cats stretch to every 6 to 8 weeks, with nail trims in between. Indoor cats shed year-round in Gurgaon's climate, so the comb-out in each session matters more than the bath.

Building the habit: booking ahead

The best schedule in the world fails at one point: the booking. In Gurgaon, weekend slots fill a week ahead, and a missed slot becomes a missed month, and a missed month becomes a matted coat. The fix is mechanical: book the next session before you leave the studio, or set a reminder on your phone for the week your dog is due.

A standing rhythm also makes the groomer's job easier, because the coat arrives in known condition every time. That means steadier pricing, shorter sessions and a calmer dog, which is the whole point of the schedule in the first place.

When to bend the schedule

Every schedule is a starting point. Bend it for the obvious reasons: a dog that plays in the park daily needs baths more often, a dog with skin conditions follows the vet's rhythm rather than the calendar's, and a senior dog that tires quickly gets shorter, more frequent sessions instead of long ones. The schedule is the plan, and your dog's coat and mood are the feedback. Adjust, and keep the new rhythm consistent.

What happens if my dog is overdue for grooming?

Tell us honestly when you book. We allot extra time for de-matting and coat recovery, and we quote the extra work before starting.

Can grooming be too frequent?

Weekly baths with harsh shampoo can dry the coat. Monthly to 6-weekly sessions with breed-appropriate products are safe and beneficial.

Do you groom puppies?

Yes. Puppy sessions use slow introductions and puppy-safe shampoo, and first-timers get extra time. Starting early makes adult grooming easy.
