In Gurgaon's summer, groom your dog every 4 to 6 weeks, walk before 8 AM or after 7 PM, and never shave a double-coated breed to beat the heat. The coat insulates, so the right summer grooming is de-shedding, not shaving, plus regular baths to keep the skin clean and cool.

How Gurgaon heat affects your dog's coat and skin

Summer in Gurgaon means weeks of 40-plus-degree days, and dogs feel them more than we do. A double coat that was a winter asset becomes a furnace, dust and sweat clog the skin, and the fur your dog sheds gets trapped against the body. This is the season when skin irritation, hot spots and odour show up the most.

The good news: most of it is manageable with the right grooming routine, and most of the routine is regular rather than complicated.

The summer grooming schedule

Summer schedule by coat type

Coat typeGrooming gapThe priority
Long, silky (Shih Tzu, Maltese)Every 4 weeksKeep the coat short and brushed, mats trap heat
Double coat (Labrador, Golden, Husky)Every 5 to 6 weeksDe-shedding blow-out before the heat peaks
Short coat (Pug, Beagle, Indie)Every 6 to 8 weeksBath, nails and fold cleaning

De-shedding is the single most useful summer service for double-coated breeds. The loose undercoat traps heat like a blanket; removing it in one session lets the coat breathe. It is a Rs 299 add-on to any groom at our Sector 109 studio.

Why you should never shave a double-coated dog in summer

Shaving seems like the obvious summer answer, and it is the one thing we refuse to do to double-coated breeds. The outer coat reflects sun and heat, and the undercoat regulates temperature. Shaved dogs get hotter, not cooler, and they become vulnerable to sunburn and insect bites. The blow-out removes the undercoat while leaving the protective coat intact.

We never shave a Husky, Labrador or Golden Retriever in summer. The de-shedding blow-out gives them the relief owners want without the damage shaving causes.

Bathing in summer: how often and how

Summer baths keep dust and sweat off the skin and genuinely help a hot dog settle. At home:

  • Use a gentle, dog-safe shampoo. Human shampoo strips the coat's natural oils, which matters more in summer.
  • Rinse thoroughly. Shampoo residue left on the skin itches more when it is hot.
  • Dry completely, even for short coats. A damp coat in Gurgaon heat turns into a skin problem within a day.
  • A cool-water rinse on a hot day is fine for most dogs, but never use ice-cold water or ice packs on the body.
  • If your dog has a skin condition, use the medicated shampoo your vet recommended, not a guess.

Beyond grooming: the summer rules that matter

  • Walk before 8 AM and after 7 PM. Pavement at noon burns paws; the five-second test works: hold your palm on the ground for five seconds.
  • Always carry water. Panting is how dogs cool down, and it needs hydration to work.
  • Never leave a dog in a parked car, even for minutes, even in shade.
  • Watch for heatstroke signs: heavy panting, drooling, weakness, dark gums. If you see them, cool the dog gradually and call a vet immediately.
  • Keep a thin, breathable layer of coat; do not shave it away.

Grooming before the heat peaks

The smartest summer move is booking grooming before the heat spikes, not during. Early June slots at our studio fill fast because every pet parent in Sector 109 and Dwarka Expressway has the same idea. A de-shed now means a cooler dog through the worst weeks, and the studio is air-conditioned for the session itself.

Summer care for puppies and senior dogs

Two age groups need extra care in Gurgaon heat. Puppies under six months have thin coats and limited heat tolerance: keep walks very short in summer, brush daily so the coat stays light, and book their first professional groom early so the habit is in place before next summer. Senior dogs regulate heat less efficiently, arthritis makes walks harder on hot pavement, and their skin is more sensitive to grooming products. For seniors, keep the schedule tight, use the gentlest products, and mention their age and any medication when you book.

Home coat care between summer grooms

Between professional sessions, three minutes a day keeps the summer coat manageable:

  • Brush daily, which removes loose fur before it mats in the heat and dust.
  • Wipe the face and folds with a damp cloth after outdoor walks.
  • Check the belly and paws for dust and grit that irritate in hot weather.
  • Keep the sleeping spot cool and clean; a dirty bed undoes the clean coat.

If your dog is a heavy shedder, the summer de-shedding guide covers when the blow-out is worth booking.

What our groomers see every summer

Every May and June, the same three cases arrive at the studio: the shaved Husky that is somehow still panting, the Shih Tzu whose mats went unnoticed until the heat made them itch, and the Indie whose home bath never quite dried and left a skin irritation behind. All three were preventable, and all three had the same root cause: the summer plan started too late or skipped the professional step.

Book the de-shed before the heat, keep long-coated breeds on their 4-week rhythm, and let the studio do the deep dry that home bathing cannot. That is the whole summer plan, and it is cheaper than the alternatives in every direction.

The bottom line

Gurgaon summer is survivable and even comfortable for dogs when the routine holds: de-shed before the heat, groom on the 4 to 6 week schedule, dry every coat completely, and never shave a double coat. Add the basic heat rules, walks before 8 AM and after 7 PM, water always, and no parked cars, and your dog rides out the season the way it should: cool, clean and comfortable.

Summer booking tips

Summer slots at Gurgaon studios compress into the cool hours, which means mornings fill first. Book the morning window, confirm on WhatsApp the day before, and consider a weekday over a weekend. The studio is air-conditioned, so the session itself is comfortable regardless of the heat outside; it is the drive and the drop-off that are better in the morning.

Should I shave my dog in summer to keep it cool?

No, never for double-coated breeds. The coat insulates against heat and sun; shaving removes that protection and can make the dog hotter. A de-shedding blow-out is the safe alternative.

How often should I bathe my dog in Gurgaon summer?

A professional groom every 4 to 6 weeks covers the deep clean. At home, a rinse or gentle bath every 7 to 10 days is fine if you use dog-safe shampoo and dry the coat completely.

When should I walk my dog in Gurgaon summer?

Before 8 AM or after 7 PM. Test the pavement with the back of your hand for five seconds; if it is too hot for you, it is too hot for paws.

How do I know if my dog is overheated?

Heavy panting, drooling, weakness, redness in the gums and vomiting are signs of heatstroke. Cool the dog gradually with room-temperature water and contact a vet immediately.

Does grooming help with summer shedding?

Yes. A high-velocity de-shedding session removes the loose undercoat, which is the fur covering your home and trapping heat against your dog's body.
